ESTABLISHING A NETWORK OF MARINE PROTECTED AREAS ACROSS SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE THROUGH A CO-MANAGEMENT APPROACH
São Tomé and Príncipe, located in the Gulf of Guinea, on the western equatorial coast of Central Africa, is a global biodiversity hotspot, with a high degree of endemism. However, both islands face challenges related to overfishing and widespread habitat degradation. Bringing together a consortium of national and international NGOs, in partnership and under the guidance of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and other government authorities, Rural Development and Fisheries, in dialogue with the Environment Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment, the project contributes to improving local livelihoods through the promotion of responsible fishing practices and investments in the supply chain. The project aims to facilitate participatory mapping of MPAs and sustainable use zones. It is also supporting the development of monitoring protocols and develops patrol skills to enable fishermen and the relevant government authorities to monitor co-managed areas.
MARINE PROTECTED AREAS: WHAT ARE THEY?
These are delimited areas in the sea that fulfill the objectives of protecting nature (fauna, flora, ecosystems) and traditional ways of life by promoting the sustainable development of economic activities such as fishing, guaranteeing a sustainable future for local communities. Investing in the conservation of these ecosystems ensures that São Tomé and Príncipe's marine beauty will endure and that artisinal fisheries will be maintained for generations to come.
THE NETWORK OF MARINE PROTECTED AREAS IN STP
The establishment of a Network of Marine Protected Areas (NMPA) in STP aims to create a NETWORK of new protected areas and sustainable use zones through a participatory co-management system. Several members of the fishing communities and the government are involved, with the aim of strengthening small-scale fisheries and promoting sustainable marine conservation. The government is currently reviewing the proposal for the Marine Protected Areas Decree Law.
